Steve Dashew designs yachts for a purpose; extended blue water cruising. His designs are in a league of their own. They are quick, safe, easy to handle, easy to maintain, and durable. These hallmarks have created a legendary, almost cult like following. His yachts are designed from his personal experience of what it is to cruise around the world. They are built for the experienced sailor that is looking for literally, the ultimate world cruising yacht.
No two of his yachts are the same, while some may share the basic characteristics of his design work; different builders were involved over the years and each hull was custom made for her owner.
The Deerfoot 63 was the last design in the Deerfoot line. It was one of the first designs made utilizing 3D CAD programming and VPP (velocity prediction program). Only a few were made. This particular Deerfoot 63 was originally built for a racer from the Great Lakes that was looking for a quick cruising yacht. She features a deeper 8' draft, and a taller mast than her sisterships, plus an extended sugar scoop transom.
Salthouse Brothers in Auckland, New Zealand, one of the worlds pre-eminent custom yacht builders, took on the job of building this Deerfoot 63 under the watch of Kelly Archer. This was a special build, as she took on much of the interior attributes of the follow on Sundeer line, but completed to an even higher level by Salthouse. On her maiden delivery she ran from Auckland to Panama, a 4,000 mile trip, averaging 200 miles a day.
The design, an evolution on the Deerfoot 62, was ahead of it?s time and holds many of todays common features. The owners suite is forward, pullman style, with a private ensuite. A large, open saloon with galley and spacious nav station. Two aft staterooms and a day head includes washer/dryer. The engine room is located under the cockpit and is quite spacious. A step down transom with sugar scoop to aid boarding of the dinghy and transfer of supplies.
Originally known as 'HOT SPUR' she arrived in Detroit in 1990 before being sold to her second owner in 1992 and moving to New Orleans before cruising the Med. In 1997 she was renamed 'ASTRA' and moved to Chicago with her third owner before heading to the Caribbean in 2002 and crossing the Atlantic in 2006. In 2007 she cruised Greece and Turkey until her fifth and current owner took possession in 2010 and moving her to California.
The current owners have twice circumnavigated, first on their Hans Christian 41 in the mid-2000's, and then again aboard 'KAILANI' with their daughter. In addition to being an accomplished sailor, the owner holds a 100 Ton USCG Masters license and is a US Sailing Cruising and CoNav instructor with over 100,000 miles on the water.
You will find that 'KAILANI' is in exceptional condition for her age and sailing portfolio. This world cruising yacht has benefitted from a comprehensive maintenance schedule with regular updates and replacements of equipment. Make no mistake, this is as good as can be bought for a circumnavigating sailing yacht.
Since I first laid eyes on her alongside the dock in Marmaris, Turkey in 2010, Kailani has taken up a good portion of my sailing heart. She looked fast, solid and maybe even a little bit saucy tugging softly at her dock lines as if to speak the words every guy fantasizes the pretty girl will say, "Let's get out of here and make it happen." So we did.
Over the next ten years Kailani was home to our family of three. She took us around the world, over 32,000 miles with landfall in 28 countries. She was the boat school for our daughter who was only four when we started out, too small to reach the top of the wheel, much less see over the bow. She kept us safe through weather that is the stuff of bad dreams, never faltering as we pushed her through to take us to our next destination. Her speed allowed her to leave last and arrive first 1,000 miles or more downwind. And, although I'm admittedly a bit prejudiced, she was always the prettiest girl in the anchorage.
Not that she and I haven't had our differences. Our daughter refers to my colorful language as "engine room words" which flowed liberally from belowdecks into the cockpit as I struggled with some infrequent repair. But these occasional bouts of barely veiled disdain for the system failures that will occur on any ocean cruising boat were, on Kailani, soon forgotten. Of all the places we have been in our travels my favorite has always been sitting in the cockpit seven days into a two-week 3,000 mile ocean passage with the sails trimmed to the quartering breeze and Kailani's long waterline making boat speed through a stunningly blue ocean under the trade wind clouds.
And she is fast. Two hundred miles in the trades was a not an atypical daily log entry, and every once in a while the sailing conditions would conspire to generate big waves, big wind and big boat speed as she would surf the swells at more than 20 knots under control of the autopilot.
And don't believe for a moment that she is too old for the job. Kailani's keel might have been laid 32 years ago but the layup is bullet proof and will carry her for decades to come. Her rig is brand new, she has new refrigeration and air conditioning and virtually every system aboard has been overhauled or replaced to the point that she is ready to go again. And go she will.

Many of 'KAILANI''s sister ships in the Deerfoot and Sundeer range are only fitted with two cabins. Not so here, this Deerfoot 63 has three cabins, plenty of room for the family or delivery crew.
Starting forward is the master cabin. This private space is just aft of the large sail locker and features a Pullman-style double bed, a wide walkway, and opposite the bed a large wardrobe and drawers. A full ensuite is included plus a large, open vanity to give more space to the area.
The saloon is massive, with port and starboard settee's, lots of storage, and a dinette table. This open area also includes the galley, and opposite that an impressively large nav station.
Moving aft from the saloon the hallway is setup just the way you would want on a passage-making yacht, straight and easy to support yourself underway. You needn't worry about spilling a bowl of soup on the way up to the cockpit. To the port side is another head with built in washer/dryer. Just aft is a guest cabin with single berth, and to starboard is the third cabin with bunks.

- Hull and deck constructed of GRP with 1.25" balsa core sandwich with 6mm outside and 4mm inside laminate. Deck outside 4mm and inside 3mm laminate. Hull and deck built in female molds using vinyl-ester resin and the glass is mainly unidirectional fibers for maximum stiffness and strength.
- Extensive reinforcement is applied in areas of loading and this includes outside hull laminate in turns of the bilges, between forward watertight and engine room bulkhead with an average thickness of 8mm at midships and 6mm at the ends. The width at midships is 3 feet tapering towards the ends. The bow is heavily reinforced of about 5mm on the centerline and tapering back to the basic laminate in a two foot band parallel to the bow.
- The entire centerline is heavily reinforced with 40mm of solid GRP. A fiberglass sump fitted into a welded steel sump is water tight allowing for no leakage to the top of the keel.
- Floors and stringers are of solid GRP made of unidirectional glass 12mm thickness; depth of floors at centerline of midships is 240mm, keel flange of 100mm
- Keel casing is stainless steel built up of 3/16" sides, 1/2" bottom, 3/4" top plate, and a 5/16" divider between lead ballast and freshwater. The keel casing is attached to the hull by a minimum of 18 - 1 1/4" stainless steel keel bits The keel bolts go through the GRP laminate and are threaded into the top plate of the keel casing.
- Transverse bulkheads are bonded and tabbed from the hull to the bottom of the deck and are constructed of GRP over a 1.25" balsa core
- Longitudinal bulkheads in the forward cabin and aft passageway are bonded and tabbed from the hull to the bottom of the deck and are constructed of marine ply over 12mm Divinycell foam
- Hull and deck in the way of mast and chainplate knees are heavily reinforced and are of GRP. Hull to deck joint flanges are solid GRP and heavily reinforced and the joint is further reinforced on the inside with GRP and has a teak caprail bolted through the top.
