Owner's Comments

The history of Albatros as I know of it.

I have no knowledge of the first 15 years of the boat.  Around 2002, it was purchased from a boatyard in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I., by Chris Cody.  He renamed it "Gypsy", and sailed it down through the Panama Canal and up to San Francisco Bay.  He put it up for sale at a Boatyard in Alameda, CA.  I looked at it there in 2004.  In 2008, he had Gypsy trucked to Annapolis, MD, and lowered the asking price.  I bought it, renamed it "Albatros", and had it trucked to Rentner Marine in Chicago.

The centerboard sheave was missing, and Rentners took it all apart and repaired it.  They had a custom Stainless bracket made with a captive sheave to prevent future problems.  It has worked flawlessly since.  The 4 sails were replaced by Sterling Sails in Chicago.  They were designed to be durable cruising sails, and are in very good condition.

The boat has been stored inside every winter at Rentners.  During sailing season, Albatros has been moored in Jackson Park Outer Harbor in Chicago.  I have used it for day sailing and once or twice a summer for 2-3 week cruises, mostly single-handed. One memorable cruise was up to Fayette, MI, on the Garden Peninsula. Towards the north end of the lake, we had 2 days of 35 - 50 kts of wind on the port beam.  We sailed with the reefed mizzen and the staysail.  The boat was a dream to sail in those conditions, reaching (pun intended) speeds of 9.5 kts over ground.  We never felt the boat was over-powered.

As far as the Perkins 4-108 engine is concerned, it had 2200 hrs on it when I bought it.  It now has 3500 hrs. The oil and filter have been changed annually in the fall at layup.  The engine oil is very easy to change as it has a hand pump to drain it, and the filter is remotely mounted in front of the engine. The fuel filters have been changed as needed, and the water pump impeller also.  The first year I had Albatros, Rentners took apart the heat exchanger and cleaned it out.  This year, 2021, I replaced the 4 6V house batteries.  The engine has always started immediately on cranking.
