Description

Absolutely stunning Nautor Swan 44 from 1972. Subject to a comprehensive refit and restoration resulting in a boat ’as new’. Must be seen to be appreciated.

FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

Originally launched in 1972 as Hull No.6, ASTRID has benefitted from a total refit and restoration over the past few seasons, culminating in her relaunch in the Autumn of 2021.

Surveyed following completion of the works, the surveyor summed up her condition with the following words:- “This vessel has been subject to a bare hull refit carried out over many years, including new teak decks, full epoxy treatment, topsides and superstructure re-gel, new machinery, all systems, electronics, deck gear, spars and rig. She is now in ‘as new’ condition, but with the benefit of modern-day technology.  She is now in effectively better than new condition.. In my opinion, the value of your boat, for insurance purposes in her current condition, her rarity value, and allowing for the current market is approximately £240,000.00..”

In addition to updating and replacing all of her systems and components, ASTRID has also benefitted from optimisation of her underwater sections including the repositioning of her rudder and skeg further aft to improve her sailing characteristics. Such modifications are popular amongst the Sparkman & Stephens Swans and represents yet another indication of the attention to detail given to the yacht by her obsessive and knowledgeable owner.

Her specification highlights include:-

  • Comprehensively refitted, updated and beautifully restored throughout to exacting standards.
  • New Beta 50 Marine diesel engine.
  • Professionally repositioned rudder and skeg for improved handing and performance.
  • All new Selden spars.
  • Replaced teak to the deck, cockpit sole and seat bases.
  • Beautifully restored chrome stainless steel deck fittings.
  • Replaced standing rigging.
  • Replaced running rigging.
  • Replaced winches.
  • New B & G electronics.
  • New Radar.
  • 2x New B&G Chartplotters.
  • New Speed, depth, wind.
  • North Sails fully battened main sail with replaced mainsail cover and lazy jacks.
  • Replaced sprayhood.
  • Replaced interior upholstery.
  • Replaced anchor windlass.
  • Replaced genoa roller furler.
  • Replaced hydraulically operated adjustable back stay.
  • Replaced batteries.
  • New Inverter.
  • Replaced heating.
  • Replaced gas oven & stove.
  • Replaced Fridge.

Now completed, her owner is planning his next project. ASTRID therefore represents a unique opportunity to acquire a newly restored example of this iconic cult-classic Sparkman & Stephens Swan 44 for immediate delivery and with a price far below that of a new mainstream production yacht of similar size.

MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS:

“The Swan 44 sleek, smooth low-profile is one of the most successful big production boats available.

A winner of the Boat of the Show Award at the 1973 Earls Court Boat Show and the Italian Nastro d’oro Eleganza Mare in the same year, the Swan 44 offers both good performance and superbly finished and fitted accommodation.

She is built with the care and craftsmanship that has become all too rare in modern boat-building. Several of the Swans have been entered in the Admiral’s Cup Race.

The ocean racing intentions are obvious from the boat’s flush deck and the fact that there is no companionway from the cockpit. Entry to the cabin is through hatch. All deck fittings are of high standard. The fore cabin is intended primarily for stowage although there are two comfortable pipecots fitted.

The main attraction is giving a good performance with combination with a first class interior. She’s very fast, a powerful racing yacht that offers tremendous value.

She is built in Finland and the beautiful matt finish given to the joinery is to Nautor’s excellent world-wide reputation. So remember nothing beautiful is easy to come by – the Swan 44.

Specifications

CONSTRUCTION

RCD Status: Our understanding is that the yacht is exempt from the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/25EC (Recreational Craft Directive) as she was built and placed into use within the EU prior to 1998.

Hull Construction:

  • GRP laminate hull construction.
  • The hull is built of single skin construction using GRP/Kevlar reinforced polyester laminate.  A high proportion of the fibres are unidirectional, giving a stiff laminate with excellent strength and fatigue properties.
  • Constructed using two primary hull moulds being bonded at the gunnel line.
  • The hull is stiffened by the use of bonded bulkheads and supports.
  • Below the waterline the hull sections have been subject to extensive inspection, moisture readings, steam cleaning and drying followed by the application of several coats of an epoxy treatment system – 2018/2019.  Described in the survey inspection from Summer 2021 as “being in most satisfactory condition with no significant areas of delamination or voids found.”
  • The topsides’ gel coat has been professionally re-gelled in an off-white colour – described in the summer 2021 survey report “the surface and finish is exceptionally good for her age.”

Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • GRP deck and superstructure construction.
  • The deck is mainly a cored-deck construction comprising solid and cored laminate.
  • New teak to the decks, cockpit sole and seat bases – 2018/2019.
  • Teak decks were fitted and bonded in place under vacuum.
  • Stainless steel toe rail to be re-painted – autumn/winter 2021.

Keel & Rudder:

  • Fin keel with keel ballast is cast lead alloyed and antimony bolted to the hull moulding.
  • Cast-in keel bolts are of high-tensile stainless steel.
  • The rudder blade is GRP and supported by a full length protective skeg.
  • The rudder blade is constructed of substantial GRP with matching mouldings, stainless steel rudder stock.
  • The rudder and skeg have been completely stripped down, inspected, repaired where required and rebuilt – 2018/2019.
  • The rudder blade is supported by a stainless-steel lower bearing, which is fitted into the skeg.
  • The rudder blade and skeg have been professionally moved as far aft as possible whilst under a previous owner for improved handing and performance.
