Rosy Pelican has been in the same ownership for 24 years. She has been an immensely successful boat for us, sailing in every sort of condition and in every sort of water, from an Atlantic crossing to a Fastnet, from a Swan regatta to sailing on the Odet River in Brittany with Olin Stephens at the helm (there’s a pic to prove it!). After all that time she was due a refit and in late 2014 she returned from Sardinia and entered the HYS yard on the Hamble. Like all such projects there was 'mission creep' (more rush than creep it seemed at times) and by the end the boat was virtually rebuilt. All those things that we had wanted to do to improve the boat, while renewing anything that was old or worn, was carried out. By the end, I think only the furniture was untouched and even that got a lick of varnish and new upholstery.
It’s a cliché, but she really is better than new - benefiting from all the latest gear and electronics that was unavailable 40 odd years ago. The opportunity has been taken to modernize the deck layout (all reefing now from the cockpit) as well as modify the hull aft and install a semi-balanced rudder. That old IOR bustle has now gone and her steering and speed greatly improved. No longer that instability downwind these boats were famous for. In one of the photos here, Rosy Pelican can be seen reaching under full spinnaker, main and genoa in about 25 knots of wind - totally under control. As one of her crew wrote afterwards “You couldn’t even think about doing that” before the modifications.
We put in a carbon mast (with added carbon to give it the strength of the old Nautor spar), new engine, some new winches, new electrics, electronics, plumbing, fridges etc. She really is almost new boat and should last another 42 years with a bit of love from time to time.

The Swan 44 is one of the classic Swans from the S and S stable. Beautiful lines, superb sea keeping and a thorough execution in excellent design and build.
The 44 was based on a very successful IOR design based on a pedigree that is second to none. Sparkman and Stephens had their roots firmly in Americas Cup and metre boats and both brothers were very successful racing yachtsman – offshore as much as inshore racing in those days.
We know this Swan very well having seen her go through this very comprehensive refit at HYS. The current owner has looked after throughout her life and Rosy Pelican now represents a very unique opportunity. The asking price doesn’t actually reflect the time, effort, sweat and tears that have gone into making Rosy Pelican what she is today. The aft hull and rudder modifications have no doubt improved on some of the idiosyncrasies that the original design possessed. The carbon mast makes a huge difference in many aspects including displacement and righting moment and there is a said to be a quote when Messrs S and S considered other yards masts moored near his own that his mast design was a little on the conservative side.
This particular Swan 44 might not appeal to those who are change adverse. This is a classic Swan 44 with all the attributes of the modern Swan on a yacht that is still an absolute pleasure to sail and to own. The classic Swan 44’s are arguably the prettiest yachts in the anchorage and Rosy Pelican might be the prettiest.
