Description

Designed by Peter Brett in the early 1970's the Rival 32 proved to be a very capable offshore cruising design with many going on to complete extended blue water cruising passages. In total around 200 hulls were constructed during the models production run. The class is still held in high regard by those looking for a dependable cruising yacht capable of reliable heavy weather sailing.

BELLEROPHON, named after one of Nelson's fleet in the Battle of Trafalgar benefits from upgrading during the current ownership. Upgrades include recently installed Beta B35 engine, re-wiring of the boat with new switch panels and Garmin plotter. For sale due to a bereavement she is offered with a comprehensive inventory and would make an ideal first boat. Lying ashore in North Argyll viewing is by prior appointment.

Construction

Built in the early days of GRP production boat building the Rival 32 was considerably over built when compared to modern yachts. BELLOROPHON was stripped out internally by the current owners during their first year of ownership and re-finished with the storage lockers overhead in the saloon removed.

Hull

  • Single piece heavy weight GRP moulding constructed in a female mould using traditional hand consolidation techniques.
  • Shallow draft encapsulated fin keel.
  • Skeg hung rudder.
  • Finished below the waterline in blue antifouling with white antifouling boot top.
  • Topsides finished in a two-pack blue paint.
  • Insulation fitted to hull sides internally.

Deck

  • Single piece heavy weight GRP moulding constructed in a female mould using traditional hand consolidation techniques.
  • Plastic capping rail concealing hull to deck joint.

Below Decks

The Rivals have a trade mark 'keyhole bulkhead' at the aft end of the living space below decks which partially divides the main saloon space from the galley and nav station after.

Forepeak - Traditional V-berth with infill section to create a comfrotable double bunk. Storage below bunks with access through bunk bases or openings centrally. Large solid GRP hatch allows access onto deck.

Heads - Compartment spans full width of boat immediately aft of forepeak. Jabsco manual sea toilet to port with sink and vanity unit to starboard. Hinged opening door forward and a sliding door aft separate the compartment from the fore peak and saloon.

Saloon - Stripped out during the current ownership the saloon has been re-finished with foam insulation added between the longitudinal stiffeners on the hull mouldings. The over head lockers outboard of the saloon seating have been removed and reinstated with shelves. Area provides two settees port and starboard which convert to single bunks. A clever infill system has been created converting saloon to large double bunk when required.

Galley - Port side of companionway. Appointed with gas stove, sink and storage outboard and beneath.

Nav station - Reworked as part of the re-wiring of the boat the ships switch panel is outboard and a clever fold out chart table has been fitted at the forward end of the quarter berth. Ample room is provided to work on a folded chart. The GPS and plotter displays are aft facing and easily visible from the cockpit. Navigation instrument repeaters are readily visible when working at the chart table.
