LA SIRENA, a J/Boats J/160 designed by Rod Johnstone is considered by many to be the perfect blend of sailing performance and cruising comfort. Winner of Sailing World's Boat of the Year "Rendezvous Racer" award in 1997, J/Boats' 53 footer does it all - daysailing, racing, coastal cruising and blue water voyaging - with exceptional success. The J/160's formula is simple, a well constructed lightweight hull with excellent sailing characteristics, comfortable interior living spaces and storage capacity and an easily handled sailplan allow her crew to sail shorthanded while knocking off 250 mile days. Three comfortable staterooms, a large galley and spacious main salon provide excellent sea berths, private staterooms and spaces for relaxing and entertaining. LA SIRENA has been well maintained and consistently upgraded by caring and knowledgeable owners. Equipped with B&G sailing instruments, Simrad autopilot, Raymarine radar/chartplotters, ICOM SSB, Lewmar electric primary and halyard winches, Leisure Furl mainsail furling, Balmar high output alternator, Westerbeke genset and 2500 watt inverter, LA SIRENA is a well prepared vessel. If you are in the market for a high performance cruiser, look no further than this exceptional J/160.

Interior Accommodations

LA SIRENA'S interior is finished in gloss varnished teak with a teak and holly sole, Corian countertops, and laminate and molded fiberglass surfaces in the head compartments. Hull ceilings are trimmed with teak battens. Her interior arrangement is spacious and comfortable, whether on a long passage or lying at anchor. Deck & Hull

Designed by Rod Johnstone, the J/160's hull profile echoes J Boats' lineage of performance sailboats, yet was designed for "comfortable and fast ocean-going cruising for a short-handed crew". Her long waterline, ample rocker, and fine entry ensure a healthy potential for speed, while a deeper v-shaped forward section and curved bilges amidships provide a smoother ride in waves and chop. Generous reserve buoyancy forward helps to keep the bow up in fast reaching and downwind conditions. Flared topsides help to create a dry deck on all points of sail. Her modern underbody configuration with fin keel and spade rudder keep weight low, increase efficiency and upwind pointing ability and aid in maneuvering. The result is a yacht that is safe and enjoyable to sail. Her molded fiberglass rudder shaft is designed to deflect upon striking an underwater obstacle without damaging the appendage.

The J/160's deck arrangement is ideal for extended cruising and offshore sailing. There is excellent on deck storage. Forward is a large sail locker with hanging bars for sheets and spare dock lines. Aft, storage is available in a large locker aft of the cockpit that also allows good access to her steering gear and autopilot. An additional cockpit locker below the port cockpit seat is available for storing dock lines and sheets. The large cockpit with a unique teak table that retracts to the sole allows six or more people to sit outside for drinks or a meal. The bench seats are long enough to stretch out for a nap and tall seatbacks are comfortable and provide a feeling of security. A dodger with stainless steel handholds that is attached to the molded fiberglass sea hood keeps the forward end of the cockpit protected. All halyards and control lines are led to the aft end of the coachroof. The mainsail halyard and Leisurefurl boom control lines are led to an electric halyard winch on the cabintop. The aft end of the cockpit is open and allows for an oversized aluminum wheel which provides great feel and excellent visibility. The traveler is located just forward of the wheel and both the traveler and mainsheet can be easily operated by the skipper. Aft of the wheel is a flat deck that separates the cockpit from the wide swimstep at the transom. An aluminum toe rail with chocks runs the length of the vessel. Stainless steel stanchions with double lifelines surround the deck and there are boarding gates to port, starboard and aft at the transom. Stainless steel handrails run along the cabintop. At the bow, there is a retractable bowsprit for an asymmetric spinnaker. There is also a carbon fiber spinnaker pole mounted on deck.

LA SIRENA'S deck and hull were built in Rhode Island by TPI to exceed ABS Offshore standards. Her construction is of fiberglass laminate with Baltek end grain balsa core in her hull and deck and solid fiberglass at high load areas. TPIs patented SCRIMP resin infusion technique ensures a strong, lightweight structure. Her outer hull layer is blister resistant vinylester resin. The hull to deck joint is an inward turning flange sealed with 3M 5200 structural sealand and mechanically fastened every four inches via a full length aluminum toe rail on deck. Bulkheads are tabbed with fiberglass to the hull and deck and fiberglass floor stringers and mast step are laminated to the hull. Aft of the forward sail locker is a watertight bulkhead preventing water intrusion to the main cabin in the case of a collision.
